Kevin Rose and Proof for raising nearly $66 million after selling out the Moonbirds NFT collection.

Yasmine El Baggari and Voyaj for reaching their first part of their crowdfunding goal. There is still time to join as a founding member!

Ian Harvey (Harv) who launched Collective Intelligence 2.0 on 14 December, following an 18 month journey and trialling of ideas like impact teams as well as support and ideas from several Fellows.

Dave Williams and dissigno for receiving multiple hundred million dollar investments from Infratil and the NZ Super-Fund.

🌏 Environment 🌏

Fellow and Hillary Summit Governor Matt Petersen was a keynote speaker at the Blue and Green Technology Conference in Auckland in December, where he observed that New Zealand is leading the way when it comes to incubating clean technologies. Matt, who is the CEO of Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) also shared with Tātaki Auckland Unlimited and Climate Connect Aotearoa some of the programmes coming out of LACI to unlock innovation and support an inclusive green economy. Matt was interviewed by RNZ and discussed how California is working to ensure there is enough infrastructure in place to support the wave of EVs by 2035.

Conference Videos

Josh Whiton and MakeSoil have launched a new mobile app for iOS, making it easier than ever to find a soil site for our valuable food scraps, wherever we live or travel.

Carl Meyer, of Bio Gold, and Bernadette Casey, of UsedFULLY, presented their products and vision at Parliament during a Creative HQ event.

Carl is using pine pollen to support hormonal health and positively affect mood, energy, sleep, appetite and more. Bernadette, along with Deborah Crowe and Peter Thompson, is reducing waste and emissions by providing a transparent, onshore solution for unwanted clothing and textiles.

Jason Kibbey and Bernadette Casey were on a panel in Wellington, hosted by Cogo, to discuss ‘why we need data-driven-decarbonisation now, more than ever.’ They discussed the need to quantify the scale of the climate challenge, the rate of change and the effectiveness of reduction strategies that are available.

Rod Oram delivered a strong and passionate message from the COP 27 meeting in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt. His comprehensive update included behind the scenes anecdotes and his own keen observations on the workings of key NZ politicians and groups at the global meeting. He also provided a heartfelt call to action.

He also wrote a piece for Newsroom, ‘NZ needs to show same leadership in biodiversity as climate crisis’ in response to the UN Biodiversity Conference in Montreal.

Bex De Propso wrote the last ‘impact in action’ story of 2022 featuring Nathaniel Calhoun and his passion and drive to help stop and restore biodiversity loss through tools including Eco-index, which is New Zealand’s first certified Digital Public Good. 

With Eco-index, Nathaniel guides a team that provides customised insights and recommendations for iwi, government, industry and communities to create better outcomes for our native species.

Emeline Paat-Dahlstrom and Eric Dahlstrom chaired two team projects for the International Space University’s Southern Hemisphere Space Studies Program (SHSSP23) in Australia. This is a 6 week program starting mid-January.

Emeline and Eric are founders of SpaceBase, a purpose-driven consultancy focused on democratising access to space.

Anne-Marie Brook and Human Rights Measurement Initiative (HRMI) have developed a brand new human rights dataset, tailored to meet the needs of the investor community. Anne-Marie is offering free participation in a pilot trial of this dataset. 

HRMI is developing a unique and powerful network of trusted human rights experts around the world, and compiling their knowledge into meaningful country scores and qualitative data, to make it easier for firms who want to do in-country human rights due diligence but who do not have these relationships.

Reza Jarral was featured in Stuff’s Movers and Shapers piece for pioneering virtual health in New Zealand. Reza is passionate about how technology can shape a better, brighter, collective future using technology. He has an inner-city Auckland practice geared to those with high needs and is the Clinical Director of CareHQ, which brings healthcare to those who have no access to a GP.

📈 Economic 📈

Steven Moe presented about Community Finance at the Assembly of Investment Chairs event in Auckland. Steven and Community Finance have raised $105M for social housing in New Zealand so far.

Community Finance provides low-cost finance to New Zealand’s Community Housing Providers to build new, safe and affordable homes for Kiwis.

Thabiso Mashaba was featured in The Brilliant magazine based in Australia to discuss his company, These Hands, and the impact he’s making in Africa. He details his 10 year journey of how he’s changing leadership and development in Africa and abroad into a more community-led approach. Thabiso is working with Māori communities in Tolaga Bay, a town in the North Island, New Zealand.

Sasha Lockley was featured in NZ Herald’s The Front Page podcast to talk about making the most of what we’ve got over the Christmas period and how to avoid falling into debt or sales tricks to skip a financial Christmas hangover in 2023.

Sasha is the CEO and cofounder of social lender Money Sweetspot, which provides financial reset debt consolidation loans to help Kiwis take charge of their financial life, and in December Sweetspot announced a $5m fund through a partnership with BNZ.

Khalid Albaih’s op-ed was featured in Al Jazeera, likening Elon Musk to a social media autocrat.  

Khalid is a Sudanese artist and political cartoonist, building a platform to help people and organisations activate space to be reanimated by artists.

Justin Kan’s Fractal was featured in The Crypto Times for expanding its Web3 gaming platform from the Solana blockchain to the Polygon blockchain network. Prior to Fractal, Justin was the cofounder of Twitch.

Fractal SDK allows developers to create in-game marketplaces, allowing players to browse and transact in NFTs without leaving the game.
