🌏 Environment

Chelsea Robinson of the Open Lunar Foundation, a nonprofit working towards a cooperative future on the Moon, co-penned a piece for Stuff, “Embracing our place at the edge of the world for cooperation in space.”

Carl Meyer and his company, Bio Gold, received funding from the Ministry of Primary Industries to develop a pine pollen industry in Aotearoa and was featured on RNZ to discuss his plans. Pine pollen supplement has been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine.

James Nikitine and Denise Young contributed to the short film, “The Global Commission on the Economics of Water”, alongside Johan Rockström, an internationally recognized scientist for his work on global sustainability issues.

Lisa King, one of Aotearoa’s most well-known female entrepreneurs, shares how failure doesn’t mean the end of everything with Stuff.co.nz. Lisa is founder of Eat My Lunch, eliminating child school hunger, and AF Drinks, a non-alcoholic drink selection.

Khalid Albaih had a hidden sound installation, Platz der Deutschen Einheit (The Walls Have Ears), in a Danish underpass. Hidden speakers placed in random locations along the tunnel tell stories of asylum seekers in Denmark.

Sacha MacDonald’s latest project, the Toiere Vendor Workshop, is supporting Māori businesses to grow their markets. Their mission is to provide a self-sustaining framework that will support Māori in business across diverse sectors to contribute to the economic development of Māori.

J Allard will be helping GoFundMe scale their impact as their new Chief Product and Technology Officer. He believes he has discovered a team as passionate about using the internet as a force multiplier for good as he is. J Allard was a co-founder of the Xbox.

Alex Lee and Dan Shanan, wrapped up the 17th annual Doc Edge Film Festival earlier this month after 5+ weeks of films, displays and talks, featuring many Fellows including Corinne van Egeraat, Petr Lom, Arash Tayebi, Kat Lintott, Alexandra Johnes and Chris Gerbhardt. Doc Edge celebrates, supports and showcases world-changing documentary storytelling.

Rosalie Nelson, Chief Executive of EHF, delivered a message for NZ to be forward-focussed in growing the talent and skills we need for the future in an interview on the AM Show, a NZ TV breakfast show.

Simone Kidner, Katy Grennier and John Giergyn are making progress with the Golden Bay co-living initiative, north of Nelson in Takaka. The first neighbourhood of 34 homes has nearly sold out. The initiative has a 14.5 hectare block of farmland that’s set to house hundreds of people, who will own their own homes and have a command house for shared meals and communal land for gardens.

Awards and recognitions 🏆

Thabiso Mashaba for being selected as one of the Top 50 Finalists by #FallingWallsEngage in the #ScienceEngagement category. This is for his work with the IDIN Southern Africa project.

Kaye-Maree Dunn for being selected as Asia 21 Young Leaders Class of 2022. Asia 21 convenes young leaders for discussions and collaboration, and unleashes them to continue working across boundaries to maximum impact.

James Nikitine and Blue Cradle for winning a microgrant from Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) for their deep-sea mining project!

Florence Van Dyke for her new position as Head of Sustainability at New Zealand Trade and Enterprise Te Taurapa Tūhono, where she will be supporting New Zealand companies to adopt sustainable business strategies.
